Stanley Flat Renovation
Situated above Hong Kong’s iconic Stanley Market, the dividing walls between two 300 sf apartments were removed to create one connected space. By doing this renovation, a two bedroom apartment was created, and the natural light that now flowed through the space made it feel much larger than its diminutive 600sf size. In the kitchen cabinets, built-in wardrobes and dining furniture, B Squared Design used a light color palette of whites, creams, and gold fixtures to further increase the illusion of more space.
As storage was a critical consideration in this project, B Squared Design’s goal was to maximize capacity without compromising on design. Great thought was put into the design of the various built-in storage solutions throughout the apartment: Floor-to-ceiling cabinets, wardrobes, and a bespoke gas-lift storage bed were all designed to be able to hold the client’s items and keep the apartment clutter-free and organized.
A key element in the flat was the custom-made Murphy bed. B Squared Design often uses these types of beds, as they work well in Hong Kong’s small apartments by not taking up valuable floor space during the day and folding out at night into comfortable beds. Beyond its functionality, this innovative piece of furniture also served as a focal point in the home’s living area, as the underside of the bed had a raised decorative design that beautifully and seamlessly folded into the neighboring cabinet and bookshelf to blend in with the overall design aesthetic.
Another significant aspect of the project was the transformation of the rooftop into an additional "room." The entire area was redesigned to maximize its potential as a functional and enjoyable outdoor space. It was divided into different zones, including a daybed lounger, dining space, and a small garden, thus giving the family their own personal space to BBQ and enjoy an evening meal together outside.
The finished flat showcases how thoughtful design and innovative storage solutions can transform a small, cramped apartment into a comfortable, functional and spacious-feeling home.
